Launching the INHERIT Project.
inherit.interreg-med.eu/

About the project

INHERIT is an integrated Interreg MED project with 15 partners from 10 Mediterranean countries namely Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta, France, Montenegro, and Portugal. It aims to protect each country’s natural heritage from the negative effects of intensive tourism through the promotion of innovative ‘bottom-up’ approaches. The project is expected to ensure the future of the Mediterranean environmental habitat as well as its sustainable tourism growth potential.

Guiding principles

Alleviating the pressures exerted by tourism activities on the Mediterranean coastal natural heritage is governed by 3 principles within the INHERIT project:
1) Protection of the natural heritage from the negative effects of mass tourism.
2) Highlighting the natural heritage as an asset that has the potential to help in addressing seasonality and extend the tourist season and improve the branding of tourist destinations.
3) Implementation of collaborative and bottom-up initiatives by tourism operators and businesses to protect and enhance the natural heritage.

Project outcomes

The project will identify Mediterranean-wide protection measures to address the negative effects of intensive tourism flows in the areas and implement these measures in designated areas identified as INHERITURA areas. These areas in which human activities coexist with substantial natural heritage will act as models to scale up and out the approach to other Mediterranean areas. Locally, the island of Gozo will be hosting the first pilot project within the INHERIT project with the aim to increase tourism attractiveness in a sustainable manner.
